Choosing Overhead Door Closers
CRITICAL DOOR CLOSER SELECTION INFORMATION Corrected Door Weight Calculator - Adding door closers and ironmongery will have a disproportionate effect on the calculated door weight. It’s critical that you take into account the calculated door weight when considering the correct hinges and closers for a door. We offer this simple guide that will help you make the correct selection.
CHOOSING A DOOR CLOSER What Do I Need To Know Before I Order?
Before choosing a door closer, we recommend you have the following information to ensure you make the right choice: • Door width • Door weight - calculate using our ‘Corrected Door Weight Calculator’ below • Where is the door located in the building, i.e. children, general public, office staff, elderly or disabled users • Is the door a fire door and is it a 30 or 60 minute door • If the closer will be pull or push side mounting
Start with your actual door weight
Add [to original leaf kg]
= Corrected Door Weight
Add 20% to start weight for fitting a closer and ironmongery or add 100% if your selected closer needs a backcheck function Add 15% for heavy use doors i.e. corridors Reduce by 10% for light use doors i.e a storeroom
Example
50kg fire door blank, fitted with a back- check door closer in a busy office corridor = 115kg corrected door weight
What Are My Legal Requirements?
For fire doors, BS EN 1154 and BS EN 1155 are now required standards to which door closers must be tested. In order for door closers to be CE marked, they must be tested to this standard.
